John 1:15-34
(15) John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. (16) And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. (17) For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. (18) No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (19) And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? (20) And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. (21) And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am Not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. (22) Then said they unto him, who art thou? That we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? (23) He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. (24) And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. (25) And they asked him, And said unto him, Why baptize thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? (26) John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not. (27) He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. (28) These things were done on Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. (29) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world. (30) This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. (31) And I knew him not: but that he should be manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. (32) And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. (33) And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. (34) And I saw, and bare record, that this is the Son of God.
7: What was the law given by Moses? Ten Commandments as well as the rules by which the Israelite people were suppose to live to keep themselves "set apart" from other peoples and nations.
These laws can be found in Exodus 20-23. (Some laws are explained in more detail throughout Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.)
Grace = Gift – Something we do not deserve.
8: Through whom is grace given to us? Jesus Christ
(John 1:14, Ephesians 2:1-10, 2 Timothy 1:7-10, Titus 2:11-14)
9: Who is the truth? Jesus
(John 1:14, John 14: 1-7, 1 John 5:19-21, John 17:15-18)
10: Who is Elias? Elijah
(Malachi 4:5, this is a deeper study for another time.)
11: What was Johns calling? "To make ready a people prepared for the Lord"...
(Luke 1)
12: Who is the prophet Esaias? Isaiah
(Another study for another time.)
13: What does the Prophet Isaiah say about John the Baptist? "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord....."
(Isaiah 40:3)
Genesis 2
(1) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the hosts of them. (2) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; And he rested in the seventh day from all his work which he had made. (3) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (4) These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, (5) And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: fir the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. (6) But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. (7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (8) And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. (9) And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also on the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (10) And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. (11) The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; (12) And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. (13) And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. (14) And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. (15) And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (16) And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: (17) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (18) And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (19) And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. (20) And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowls of the air, and every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. (21) And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; (22) And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. (23) And Adam said, This is now bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man. (24) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall become one flesh. (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 2: 4-25 give more details about creation.
That is all for now. Next time we will continue on with John chapter one and see how we can be sure Jesus is the Lamb of God. In preparation for this, if you would like to read ahead, we will be reading: Genesis 3, Exodus 12:1-30, Isaiah 53
Hope this is helpful and I pray you are learning something new as we travel through John and Genesis together.
May the Lord Speak to your Heart as you seek His will for your life.
